Bathroom
Nearly 20% of water consumed in the home is used in the bathroom, with 11% of that water flushed down the toilet. Leaving taps running while you brush your teeth or shave, and taking long showers and deep baths can waste hundreds of litres of water per person a day.
Tips to save water in the bathroom:
- Cut your shower time back to four minutes. Every minute you spend under the shower uses between 10-20 litres of water. Reducing your shower time by just two minutes can save a considerable amount of water each week. An average showerhead uses 20 litres of water per minute while a low-flow showerhead (minimum 3 star rated) uses only nine litres of water per minute. A four minute low-flow shower uses only 36 litres of water
- Install a water efficient showerhead and save up to 11 litres of water every minute. Not only will you save money on your water and energy bills by using less hot water you’ll also help to reduce your household’s greenhouse gas emissions. SA Water offers a rebate of up to $30 when you purchase and install a low-flow showerhead
- Install a dual flush toilet and save up to 50% of water on every flush
- Make sure your toilet cistern isn’t leaking. Drop some food colouring in the cistern. If the colour appears in the toilet bowl without flushing, you’ve got a leak
- Check for leaking taps around the house. A tap leaking 60 drops a minute can waste about y 8,000 litres of water per year
- Don’t let the tap run while brushing your teeth. Wet your toothbrush before you begin and use a glass of water to rinse your mouth. A running tap uses about 16 litres of water per minute
- Use a plug in the basin when shaving rather than letting the tap run
